The year was 1215, right after the great cataclysm. Humans were given the chance to tame a powerful beast to defend themselves against the monsters that emerged from the dimensional rifts. At the age of eighteen, every person forms a bond with a creature that becomes their lifelong partner. Most bond with wolves, hawks, or bears. One young man bonds with a demon. The demon is not the obedient companion that normal beasts provide. It is intelligent, manipulative, and harbors ambitions that extend far beyond serving a human master. The bond between tamer and demon is a constant negotiation of wills, with each side pushing the other toward greater power and darker choices. As the young demon tamer rises through the ranks, he discovers that the cataclysm was not natural -- it was engineered by entities that feed on the bond between humans and their tamed creatures. His demon, far from being a liability, may be the key to understanding and ultimately defeating the architects of the cataclysm. The tamer who was ostracized for bonding with the wrong creature becomes the one person capable of bridging the gap between humanity and the darkness that threatens to consume it.
