Before Damon could respond to her strange statement, the sound of heavy boots crunching on the pebble path broke the silence.

Kade, Damon’s aide, walked up the small wooden ramp and entered the white gazebo. He was carrying a thick, dark grey wool blanket folded neatly over his arm. He had gone back to the mansion to fetch it because the morning breeze was getting slightly cooler, and the doctor had ordered the General to keep his injured leg warm.
