After his talk with Tirpitz, Oskar crossed the narrow corridor between carriages, the train's motion a steady sway beneath his boots. Brass lamps hummed behind frosted glass; beyond the windows, winter fields blurred into a pale smear.
Essen met him at the door to the Kaiser's carriage, face unreadable as ever, and stepped in ahead of him.
"Your Majesty," Essen announced smoothly, "His Highness the Acting Crown Prince requests an audience."
