On the afternoon of July 17th, a British cargo steamer should have been feeling safe.
She was already well into the eastern Atlantic, driving southeast through long grey swells roughly two hundred kilometers west of the Orkney Islands. Behind her lay the hard part of the voyage—nearly two weeks of ocean, storm skirts, engine rhythm, watches that blurred into one another. Ahead lay the familiar approach to home waters: more traffic, more lighthouses, more certainty.
Her holds were packed tight with grain from Canada.
