Königsberg smelled of coal smoke, wet stone, and freshly turned earth.
Not the festive smell of a city dressing itself for parade—this was the smell of a borderland bracing for impact. Rail yards clanged day and night. Truck engines growled through the streets hauling crates of wire, timber, ammunition, fuel, and men who had stopped calling it a special operation and started calling it what it was.
