The roar that rose from the square did not fade when Oskar stepped away from the stone balustrade. It rolled outward through streets and alleyways, through factories and churches, into taverns and kitchens and railway yards. By evening the entire city thundered with it—nationalism braided with faith, urgency mistaken for righteousness.
