After seeing to their adult needs, Oskar and Tanya returned to the breakfast room later than anyone had expected.
The children's table was already abandoned. Cups sat empty, crumbs brushed aside, chairs pushed back at odd angles where small bodies had fled in a hurry. Morning light still poured through the tall windows, but the noise and chaos had moved on, leaving behind only the quiet aftermath of a family already dispersed.
At the main table, the adults lingered. The cloth had been half-cleared. Newspapers lay folded and refolded. Coffee had gone cold. A few glasses of juice and mineral water caught the light as conversation drifted lazily, unhurried.
