Chapter 7: In Shadow
The maintenance path was narrow.
It ran along the outer wall of the training grounds, shielded from the main practice area by a row of storage sheds that housed equipment and spare summoning materials. Wide enough for two people to walk side by side, which meant that the two older students had positioned themselves very deliberately to block the exit. They were not standing there by accident. Someone had chosen this spot because it was the one section of the academy grounds where you could have a conversation that the instructors could not see from their standard positions.
