Seraine was quiet at breakfast.

Not unusual — he’d been quiet since he told them about his mother, the particular quiet of someone carrying something they’d finally put down for one afternoon and then picked back up again in the morning. Yuuji had noticed it the way he’d learned to notice things at Halcyon: not by looking directly but by the shape of the absence.

He ate his eggs. Didn’t say anything.
